Did you set your city graphic quality to low? Because if you did, that would be the reason you don´t see those background buildings anymore. The graphic quality needs to be set at least to medium for you to see those buildings.

And also, not all the wonders have conterparts in the mountains... but cerebros pointed the main reason.
