If I use a timer to make the merchant available again, does the pending trade conclude successfully or get cancelled?
When I send the merchant off to trade it looks like I 'receive' the goods immediately so I'm guessing a sped up trade will work but would like to know for sure.

Speeding it up causes the wee sod to return to be able to toddle off again you definitely keep the trade. All the speeding up does is to bring him back and make him available for another transaction quicker.
