Answered Instants - how do I use them?

I must be missing something really simple, but how do you use instants? If I click on them in the inventory I get a little message saying they can't be used from the inventory, and a list of all the things they can be used for. Then, when outside the inventory and I click on one of the processes listed that is in production, such as a workshop, I am not offered access to the instants to speed it up. So how do they work?

To use the Booster instants:​

1. Start an upgrade on a building.
2. Click on the building to open the upgrade window.
3. Click on the timer:

4. Apply as many as boosters as you wish:

Ah, that explains it. As I said, I was missing something really simple!
