How in holy Hell are you supposed to fight an army that has FOUR TIMES as many units as you? This is not about the size of the unit I have vastly larger units but even an elephant can be taken down by a colony of red ants!!!

During the tournaments I have found a few provinces where my army of 5 units are going up against units of the same size but they have 12 instead of 5!!!!

It's a no win no matter what unless you pay the ransom!

There is NO strategy - just pay!

NO FAIR!

...and before the whingy police give me the life's not fair shpeel, THIS IS A GAME IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE FUN NOT REAL!!!!

Life's not fair.

But unfortunately neither is the battle system. As you get further away from your town, or go further in the tournament (wether that is in the amount of stars, or number of provinces fought) the enemy teams will become bigger and bigger. The only solution is to join the armsrace, getting the Knowledge Tree upgrades for your squads (troopquality and squadsize) and getting the ancient wonders that increase their damage and health.

Eventually though, even the Knowledge Tree and the ancient wonders won't allow a win anymore. That's simply how the calculations behind the system work.
All you can do then is "cater".

I fight until I have no more troops or cannot win any more , whichever comes first , then I cater until it gets too expensive.
My advice is research and build Ancient Wonders , which should be upgraded as much as possible to improve troops health and strength. The 2x2 buildings won in events which give troops a boost for 5 days are also very useful in tournaments.

Unit types and terrain also come into equation - you can still win with relatively little losses if those are in your favor. But there are some battle setups that you just can't win no matter what buffs you have from your AW. That's when you cater.

This took so much work xd you have no idea. Consuming my troops 24/7
And the stupid thing is the tournaments only use the SAME troops over and over. there is a lack of divercity.
And then the resource costs start to reach the 1000+ tier 1 goods and 500+ tier 2 goods per encounter...

They only ever use Dryads, the human heavy ranged units, the Heavy melee orcs, those heavy melee armour guys, those heavy melee aligators and sometimes the orc heavy ranged units.

They almost never use mages or light melee characters? Why is that >-> The tournament almost demands you to only use mages heavy melee units, light and heavy ranged units. But for people starting out you burn out your starting 100 treants and paladins so fast.

You make the tourneys stack heavy ranged units.
But the units that counter them you only research laaaaater on in the game. i remember only getting to fully participate in my 3rd tournament.

Its not about "FAIR" Its called unintuitive =_=

Each tournament requires different troops trained. In that sense there is diversity, but within a single tournament they are repetitive. I will agree on that point. However, this makes things easier as you know what to build up before a tournament starts. So before the marble tournament I stockpiled light ranged, mages and heavy ranged because I knew that's what would be needed. For the next tournament I know that we need light ranged, heavy melee and mages.

I have complained that tournament fighting has gotten harder than it used to be and I'm not sure if it's because I'm at a higher level or if they have just made it harder. However, I only auto-fight and with the right troops picked I can fight through the first three rounds of any of them and fight through all rounds on the ones that are easier to fight, such as the silk tournament (assuming that I have enough troops anyway). There will always, however, be some provinces where it is a no-win and I need to cater without even trying the fight.

As a general rule of thumb I allow for the fact that I will need to cater rounds 5 and 6 almost exclusively, but that's OK because I can't train enough troops to make a serious dent on those rounds unless I have planned it weeks in advance.

I fought the marble tournament using mainly Archers and Treants with a buff on the Archers :). Different Provinces require different troops. I only used Golems if the enemy were mainly Light Ranged and Light Melee , which was not often. Sorcereress' are best used when the enemy is mostly Heavy Ranged and Heavy Melee.

I would suggest using a site such as https://www.gamersgemsofknowledge.com to learn about what's needed for each tournament.

As soon as the previous tournament ends I start to make the troops for the next one so that I'm as prepared as possible before it starts.

I am really unsure what you are comparing here. The system is designed that you are not meant to win when outnumbered 2:1, this ratio is when comparing a 5v5 fight squad size. Tournaments never get to this ratio, the hardest they get is 1.6:1 in the last round and they actually start in your favour.

Whether the enemy has 5 squads or 8 squads makes little difference, if you select the right troops in a balanced fight you will steamroll them. While it seems complex at first the basics of combat requires little more strategy than insert 5 of x troop and win the bulk of the time. If you want a higher ratio of winning then you need to be prepared to learn more about combat and/or build military buildings/wonders.

4 of the 9 provinces use mages or light melee as the key unit, I would not consider that as almost never, it is almost 45% of the time. Archers are the key unit in only 1 of the 9 provinces but they are great support in several others.

The basic barracks troops are enough to auto-fight into the last couple rounds of tournaments if you have enough troops. Of course some fights you still need to cater. If you are using the specialist troops then the selection gets more interesting. These ones do better in auto-fights at the harder levels but it does take more experience to get the right combinations.

People in chapters 1-3 are at a disadvantage for combat in tournaments due to troop selection. I can't see this changing, thankfully you get a new unit type in chapter 2 and the rest in chapter 3 so the "pain" is rather short lived. It then comes down to shear luck if your first tournament is your boost or not and if it requires a unit type that you lack.

One of the problems I have is the terrain. In some battles the best bet is some of the heavier close combat units that move very few squares at a time, despite the enemy consisting of units that chuck stuff from a distance. You make this choice and then you see your terrain and if you are unlucky it is complicated and your slow-moving unit have to take more rounds to reach the enemy threading themselves through the terrain, all the while being bombarded by the enemy. By the time my troops arrive they can be severely depleted.

Another thing I've recently noticed, again particularly with my slower moving troops, is that frequently although there is plenty of space for them to move their moves are skipped by the "round-meter" at the bottom. It just slides past some of my troops moves without them making any. So, already slow moving, they are now being handicapped, for reasons i don't understand, by being made to miss their move.

Because the computer has moved a guy directly into your other troops way and blocked them in

No, not the case. I'll often have 1 or 2 troops that never move for the first five rounds. They just stand at the back surrounded by masses of space. The after a few rounds they decide to join in.

They still won't move if another unit is blocking a clear path towards a spot where it can hit the enemy. As in, holding up a chokepoint on the map. If, for example, there are 3 paths towards the enemy which are only 1 square wide and they have a unit in all of them all already, the other 2 units won't move.

It's a silly A.I. thing.

P.s. I hope this made sense, I don't really know another way to explain it.
