Question What pushes up Spire army sizes?

There is a lot of talk about how the Battle Score adapts to your fighting attrition, but I have yet to notice anyone mention why the squad size goes up. When you first start Spire in chapter 5, the squad size is 200 with a barracks of 12 or 13. Unfortunately, the squad size and opponent ratio, is all over the place on the Spire, starting pretty bad on the first level, and lowering by the laboratory, where there are more waves. So, it's difficult to keep track of what the dickens is going on, without doing a screenshot on each battle. When I entertered Orcs, I expected something to change, but nothing did, so I'm suspecting that I'm going to get surprised when I upgrade my barracks.

Any ideas?

Hi @Fligigel I think it is just keep doing the Squad upgrades and battle related buildings. I like you expected great things of Orcs LOL. I actually did not make any progress re a successful Spire climb until C9, was still relying on a fair bit of negiotiation mixed with fighting. Use every available tool to help heal and refund armies during the climb. I hope your barracks upgrade helps you hun in the meantime keep training more squads, can never have enough. I personally prefer to keep my battle score low, it went up this week and I got there in one go by the skin of my teeth. I didn't lose a battle this week but depending on next weeks efforts relating to battle score I may be better placed to do so once or twice on the way up?

I think trying to lower your battle score by deliberately losing fights is doomed to fail, because it causes wipeouts. The correct way to do it, is "act normal" and try to keep everything stable. The various Vestige boosters make things unstable. You get a break one week, with an archer boost, and then you get irrelevant precious returns the next week. The problem I still haven't faced is that Spire overlaps with Tournaments, where you want to use Dwarven Armorer, various boosters and Fire Phoenix. If you go up Spire with Dwarven Armourer turned on, you are slightly doomed the next week, if you don't have one. Consequently, I don't use boosters, and they pile up.

But I am a bit worried that the army sizes on Spire will go up with my barracks upgrade, because the cost of creating per soldier still takes the same amounts of supplies.

Even with some losses along the way and a wipe-out or two, your SBS is hardly affected each week. It might be that not doing much Spire will be the quickest way to reduce SBS. Haven't tried it though as trying to build the Vestige of Eternity.

It has followed that if I lost a fight or two one week my SBS lowered, I am now in the 700's and never reached such dizzy heights before. Have to see how it goes? Trouble is nothing in one's city stays the same each week, some upgrade or other.

I kind of get the feeling that the losses and difficulty are going to be much the same whatever you do. If you lose fights, or lose a lot of troops, your SBS comes down. Then you can fight without losses and it goes back up again.

My SBS is in the 1400s. I'm still not losing any fights. If I wanted to bring down that score so I can take less losses, I'd have to lose a lot of troops getting there.

I have no doubt there is a way to exploit the formula to your advantage, but without an intimate knowledge of that formula, I don't know how to work out the best strategy.

Well I got my wish my SBS score went down, I have no idea why though. I did not lose a battle, got to the top in one go. So related to the amount of loss in getting there??? It seemed about the usual wipe out?

My Spire squad size has been going up, and it's logically related to barracks speed. You get 3 barracks upgrades during chapter 9, and I reckon my squad size in the laboratory is suddenly up, and absolute losses are up. However, in chapter 9, there is also a sudden increase in workshops. It takes 14 supplies to make an archer at any chapter. (Compared barracks 15 vs 23)

If you have a wipeout or two, it seems to drop your SBS. It's related to general losses, which you don't notice sometimes.
