I just started yesterday and without knowing the game accidentally joined a lame inactive fellowship of 2 people, I wish I read this first!

You can leave a fellowship and find a new one easily. The only thing you can't do is join one, leave that one and join another in the same day - there's a cooldown period of 24 hours or so.
