what is that I'm doing that causes my ranking to decrease?

Might be that other players have overtaken you - your ranking is your position in the game relative to others. Your score can stay the same or increase while your ranking can still drop if someone passes you.

I would not worry about it. Ranking means nothing to most players. There is no benefit from a high ranking in this game.
