I'm part-way through Constructs, How had I not noticed this previously?

Pretty much the only way to produce Divine Seeds is with prize buildings from Quests.

Can you reasonably progress in the game on Trader Seeds alone?

Well yes, I believe so, if you collect every 3 hrs. If not, then probably not.

You can craft the Festival Merchant in the Magic Academy. Also, you can increase your seeds by solving provinces on the world map or increasing your Ancient Wonder levels. Many players used a mix of these strategies, but the AW levels do now impact Squad Sizes in tournament.

I've never once had a seed producing event building in my city. Surely I could have used a few, but they didn't exist yet back then.

I had forgot about the fact that the Introduction of Seeds predated the introduction of Event-gifted Seed buildings.

I played with just trader (except for tiny amounts from set buildings several chapters old) until elvenar chapter where I needed more to keep up with sentient good demand.
