How to place your buildings and paths most effectively

In order to save the most space possible, and use your space as effectively as possible, follow these three rules:
  1. Make your paths as straight as you possibly can. By that I mean, use as few bends as you can.
  2. Place as many buildings as you can with the narrow end of the building pointing towards the nearest path.
  3. Always have two rows of buildings (preferably the same size) between two pathways.

Good tips.

There is also the "Double Helix" method, that uses many of these principles. You can search several threads on this forum for examples.

Nice and simple and to the point, I will say though that I don't see any reason the buildings need to be the same size on either side, just the same depth on one side (could be a completely different depth on the other side) to keep the road straight. Also you don't need the full loop, and one end could have culture buildings.

You are of course correct, but I figured most people would see that by themselves. No reason to make an explanation more complicated than necessary. Thanks for your input :)

Anyway, I have made changes to the image, based on your suggestions:

Thank you for adding my suggestion, and also helping new players with your diagrams. Anything to help players is very much appreciated my me.

I have just spent a couple of hours rearranging my town after reading through these posts & others on design of roads. Thankyou all so much for taking the time to detail this approach! While I have not yet got my town quite right, it is much better than it was. Once my set buildings have finished their current cycle, I'll rearange them a bit, then will be happy to leave it till I have more room.

Thanks once again!
