We were told on Discord, that the Devs think that it could literally crash the game. This would imply that they have perhaps tested it somewhere, and that's how they know.
Whilst it's true what you say, certainly in terms of what the devs have said, I am not sure that I buy into this idea that the game may crash any more than it is already likely. For sure there are a whole lot of moving parts, but the same can be said every time any player upgrades any Ancient Wonder. At that moment the game needs to compute all the calculations that change any levels of output and how everything relates to everything else. When you remove an Ancient Wonder, all you are doing is the same thing in reverse, even though it may amount to several levels at once, it is still only a single "transaction".

Not only that, but it is already perfectly possible to delete an Ancient Wonder, which would have exactly the same effect on the game mechanics as it would to store one. And the game doesn't crash every time someone deletes a Wonder.

So it is right for you to point out what the devs have said about this, but for my money I think they would just rather say that it isn't possible, than say that they don't want players to have the freedom to constantly change their city's powers one way or the other to suit tournaments or whatever other activities. The latter, however, would be a perfectly valid reason.

I can see the point being made for the game crashing. Upgrade or Sell an AW in 1 city and it's not such a big deal. Now take Dozens of Servers (possibly a hundred plus), thousands of Players per Server and a shed load of AW's all being moved in/out at the same time to 'game' the Spire, Tournament, FA or an Event and the ramifications on 'X' number of physical Servers' ability to process all this in real time should not be underestimated.

Do you estimate that AWs would be teleported more often than any AW in any city would be upgraded?

It's potentially possible that many players would be teleporting multiple AWs every week, in order to make spire/tournament easier. And then restoring them afterwards. And doing the same thing each week. My brain hurts just thinking about it. o_O

The game must, presumably, be stable enough for every active player on the server to upgrade an ancient wonder on the same day. When they first made it possible to sell rune shards for 15kp, I bet there was a time when people were upgrading several AWs per day. Did the game fall over? Did we notice the slightest hiccup?

Given that it takes a lot of KP's to level up each AW (especially in the later Chapters) and then we need Spell Fragments/CC's and every 5th upgrade the Rune Shards; the frequency of AW upgrades would certainly be far lower than the Teleport in/out option to 'game' such a system.
