How do you change to another colour path at the Switchpoint ? - the waypoint on the path I wish to move to is locked

It sounds like you're trying to go from Orange to Green or the reverse. You need to go through the Blue Switchpoint to do that.

It's not really "extra" badges, if you're using them for Waypoints that you are using to get to the top.

I would say that depends highly on the badge in question. If you have to use VV just to switch paths you might be better off going straight instead. If all you need is a bunch of brewers, KP and guard badges, the switching comes for free :)
