Chronicles of a 6x4 city grid

So I thought I would just start talking about my secondary city. I know that some of you don't like so-called "experimental" cities, though I no longer have any particular desire to have increased power by beating the formulas. I am just in a fellowship by myself that has a name you can't pronounce, trying to see how far I can progress through the game like this. At the moment it looks like this:

I am in the Elementals chapter and will very soon transition to Amuni. I suppose what I am wondering is whether anyone would input into this, given the brief. Would you do things any different? This is going to become more pertinent. In Amuni I will have to add one more manu, because I will need to produce T5. It will be difficult (nay, impossible) to do without losing something.

I could remove my marble manu and see how long I can survive without that. My duck still outputs T1, and remember that the costs of everything are very much less when you have so few expansions and no AWs. Or I could remove the phoenixes themselves, but in doing that I will lose population so it won't allow me to build a manu.

As it stands I have 77 expansions that I have not placed (not including premium expansions). That's quite a weird thought. I have no military in my city at all, but these days I actually fight a fair bit. Even with zero buffs to my fighting, with no AW levels and next to no expansions, fighting is surprisingly potent up to a point. It's only possible with all the free troops and troop instants that constantly appear. Albeit there is no way to see how many troops I have at any given time!

Anyway, this is only for the sake of conversation... and advice, if I am lucky.

So an update in the chronicles of a 6x4 city grid. I have now, against all odds, made it as far as the constructs chapter with this same footprint. Currently it looks like this:

I think I can make it out of The Constructs chapter. It may take some time, but the portal isn't going to grow, I don't think, and I can upgrade it with portal profit instants. However as soon as I step into chapter 15 that will be the end of the road, unless anyone has any bright ideas for me.

I currently have 87 unplaced expansions, not counting premium ones!

Yeah I could park it in chapter 15, but in that chapter there is no way to upgrade the portal without building the supporting buildings around it. You can do it a piece at a time. This is what I needed to do in S & D, i.e. I had the campus then only had space to keep one of the other buildings out at a time.

However, this won't work anymore, as I already need to have all three types of sentient manus. I guess it may be possible to only bring out manus as I need them and only keep out guest race supporting buildings as I need them... but Ch.15 will be nigh on impossible with this footprint, I think.

The other twist is that I am not in a fellowship, so I am not winning any blueprints or RRs. This makes upgrades difficult, and limits the numbers of teleport spells I can get. I think I have about 60 and they will disappear very quickly if I am constantly moving manus around.

So my 6 x 4 city has now made it into chapter 15. I am fairly sure this is the end of the road. Most resources are plentiful, but there are two main problems now. The first is mana and seeds production. It seems impossible to produce these in any quantity that doesn't slow the game down to an almost stop. The second is more terminal, and that is that it isn't possible to play through chapter 15 with portal profits. This means that I will need to build a guest race larger than my whole city grid.

So unless anyone has a bright idea for me, my options may now be to either grow my city grid or to give up on the project.

...if I remember right, you only have to get through this six researches before you can use portal profits (for the rest)...

...maybe you have space for the portal, one academy and one of the three other buildings which you can change when you have produced all the things you need for the researches...but I don't know if it is possible with the mana, orc and seed issues?...anyway it will take a long long time...

Ch15.png

...I played ch15 4 times with only portal, 2 academies and two of the other buildings which I changed as needed...

...but even if you get through the whole chapter, the next one will kill the project because of the huge guest buildings you will need...

Yeah that's kind of what I had to do in S&D. Well, I had the campus then only ever kept out one faculty at a time. Most of the other early chapters let you get away with just the portal.

I may give some thought as to whether it's possible, but yeah, mana and seeds are a problem. I am currently trying to complete one more main hall upgrade so that I can carry enough coins to build the portal, but this upgrade requires me to collect 90k seeds. It's doable, but I have to cease sentient productions, and all the while my mana decays.

Yeah, obviously I knew this would only ever go so far. Currently I have 134 unplaced expansions if I decide to do something different with it.

OK it's done, complete with spaces to put my single academy and factory. So, even though I thought the project was over, there is in fact a route onwards. It's not without problems though. My Main Hall needs to be upgraded one level in order to get out of chapter 15. This will require 910k of mana and 100k of seeds. My only mana and seeds now come from Verdant Phoenix, 1 Festival Merchant, the Trader, a Primordial Gecko, and whatever comes out of the Moonstone set.

The Main Hall, though, can be a work in progress, because it is likely to be 450 years before this ever becomes an issue.... So this can probably go quiet for a while!
