I've heard the monastery/sanctuary is only useful for manual fighting - is it no help in autofighting?

The benefit of the Monastery/Sanctuary is to boost the health of the troops you have sent into battle. I imagine this would work just as well with autofighting as with manual.

Personally I have always found boosts to fighting more effective than boosts to health. For that reason I would say that the Needles of the Tempest is the most powerful fighting AW. Also keep in mind that at the same time it is increasing the training speed, plus it is easier to level than Sanctuary/MM.
