Battle mini-guide for caterers

This is a very rough mini-guide for those who hate fighting and prefer to cater in tourneys.Try that just once, and you will be surprised how many battles you will win,and save tons of goods. No strategies or scout terrain needed,no troubling which is the correct combination of troops,no need for extra military buildings-your barracks units are more than enough.:)
1.Identify the "key unit" of the tourney(every tourney has a key unit:the troop who will train and use most in battles) https://us.forum.elvenar.com/index.php?threads/combat-101.4968/ thanks @mykan for this!)
2.Train nothing else, but the key unit in your barracks.
3.When prepairing for battle place 5 troops of your key unit in slots
4.Press auto-fight button.
5.You are done
With this, you can win 90% of 8 provinces 2-star battles, saving goods.Any battle you may lose, cater that battle. You can follow that tactic with the 3-star and above rounds, but you may need to cater more battles, but still you are going to win a lot of fights.
You can also "prepair" for the next tourney, knowing which your key unit will be,and start training it in advance,so you will have more squads.
Manual fighters will find that a very rough approach,I know, but this guide is to just save goods during a tourney.
Just try it once, and you will not regret it:rolleyes:
P.S:I'm sure a lot will already know what I have just written, but maybe some new players don't know this)

These are good tips, alsael. I would add that for the 3-star and above battles, it can help to be conscious of the number of different kinds of troops there are. Once you have more than 2 different kinds of troops, the battles are usually going to be a lot harder, so if the squad size of the enemy is bigger than your squad size and there are 3 or more different types of enemy troops, you might want to cater right away and not lose troops in a fight.

I disagree. I think each tournament has two key troop types. You may get up to 8 provinces using just one, but it will depend how many squads you have to start with because you will be losing more than you need to. You will also struggle in later rounds, even in the early provinces, even if you are stacking 4-5 MMMs or ELR, which is the best reason to use one troop type.

Go deeper into the tournament and this will probably not even work in the first round.

I know that the spirit of your thread is to encourage people into auto-fighting who only usually cater and your way is still probably better than spending goods, but people may stick with it more if they get better success.

I will disagree with your disagreement ;)

In later chapters - after you upgrade your barracks troops to L2 and especially L3 - this strategy works really well. I used to do it pretty much like that, and that worked for 12-20 provinces all the way into 6* round. Really, it all depends on how quickly you can train your cannon fodder and can you afford the supplies to max the production. Eventually you reach a point where fights are simply unwinnable without some boosts (damage/health/different unit type), but it usually happened well into 5* territory and with several counterunits in encounter and/or crappy terrain.

All this was even before I got Fire Phoenix, and I didn't even use any temp boosts outside of Unleashed Unit Upgrade when available.

Eventually (much later in the game) you may want to expand your single unit from barracks to Training Grounds/Mercenary Camp specialists, but this might be outside of "caterer" build. Ditto for damage boosts / free troops from AWs - very helpful even at low levels, but might be out of scope.of the build.

@Pauly7 I hear you,and you are right about the later rounds, but this "guide" is strictly for those who are afraid to be in the fighting process and cater everything. They can score some decent points in tourneys without being depleted of goods.:)
@MinMax Gamer I use this "guide" myself, and I can easily do 1000+ points,as I don't really have time to manual fighting. And I really like my cerberusses even though they die easily:p

I get that and your post is certainly good advice for those scared to press auto-fight.

For another little tit-bit a very interested option, as I hinted before, is to only train the one main troop type, as you suggest, but before the tournament stack 5 or more x ELR or MMM (it has to be the right tournament). The theory is that in the first two rounds your troops are strong enough to destroy opponents on the first hit and therefore you take zero troop losses. It only really works on the first or second round, but you can easily fly through 40 or more provinces that way.

So true, these buildings can really make a difference when they stack,if only you can craft enough of them:p

Yep that guide is for a very basic beginner, was originally made for some people in my fellowship who needed help when the combat system first changed.

There is also a combat 201 thread with a bit more added to it but still fairly simple. To be honest I still refer back to this myself as a reminder of what to train when I am preparing for a tournament. The basic concepts don't change although the variations with more experience will.

I'm a caterer these days but still make troops with my barracks, I have no training grounds or merc camp and no AWs for fighting - I have my own personal strategy which is to check Elven Gems https://elvengems.com/tournament/marble/ So for this tournament, I've been making priests since the end of the previous tournament and then the day of the tournament I made mortars, I already have a few paladins - the first round was primarily 5 priests with perhaps 1 mortar thrown in for the mist walkers.

2nd round will be mostly priests, maybe paladins if there are a lot of cannonneers as they're better than priests, if there are 1 or 2 mist walkers then I'll use mortars but only if there are 5 enemy squads or less, otherwise I cater.

Round 3 is harder, but some encounters are winnable with barracks troops, from there its pretty much all catering into rounds 4 and 5 - I don't bother with round 6 as the timing doesn't work for me.

I anticipate getting over 1.2k points on my current city which is half way through Chapter 5. Incidentally I use the above system for my Beta city (S&D) which is also a caterer and does the minimum on troops also and anticipate that one will get approx 2.8k points.

Just FYI, all 6 rounds are very possible with just the barracks (it's what I do), but I do rely heavily on AWs. Without a high level Sanctuary, Needles of the Tempest particularly, plus other troop enhancing AWs I can't even imagine how difficult it must now be. Add to that the Fire Phoenix plus regular troop enhancing military buildings and I do just nicely with my system. 5-6k points on two barracks troop types without having to use more than a handful of goods is fairly regular.

It's even simpler and easier for beginners to produce at the Magic Academy 3-4 buildings for Valorian valor and 3-4 buildings for Ork strategist. You will have a free army of soldiers with lots of blood in them.

@Viskyar, beginners probably aren't going to have space to have that many military buildings. This guide is directed to people who mostly cater, so they will want to have lots of goods buildings instead. I'm not knocking the VV and Orc strategist buildings, but they don't come up that frequently in the MA, and when they do there are limits on how much space you have to deploy them.
