Is the only solution to stop receiving tens of runes for AWs that are ready to be built but you don't intend building, is to build them and then delete them?

AW and unwanted runes

Nope.
You will only always get runes from AW you researched (in tourneys) Even if they are level 30, or zero... you will still get them.
I assume you don't put KPs into neighbors that own those AWs you don't want.

Your solution is probably the only way to burn through some unwanted rune shards, but you'll never get rid of them all.
Top tip: If you have an Ancient Wonder that you do want to build, but don't have enough shards, then load up one of the ones that you are not going to build with runes until the broken shard meter reaches 10. When you have the option open to forge a rune then go back to the one you are trying to build and forge it there.

And if that's still not enough, build the AW you don't want, then sell it to empty its Rune circle and start filling it again.

those shard ..u can turn them into broken shard for your valauble AW
suppose u want to build Timewrap ..but u do not have sufficient rune and broken-shard
u have a AW u do not want with plenty of rune
fill the circle, continue to feed rune even it is full in circular-ring
turning them into 10 broken-shard or 9 broken shard( if u have rune of timewrap)
back to your timewrap and fit rune and combine into it into timewrap
continue until u get your timewrap 's circular ring completed
