It says that instants cannot be used from the inventory, so I was wondering as to how they can be used.

Depends on the instant. KP instants can be used when you open an AW and want to add some KP to it. Time booster instants can be used on any place where you have a timer running, such as the timer showing how long until the training of units is complete, how long until the construction of a building is complete, etc.

You would have to go into the item you want to use the instant on first, once in there you will see a timer in green, click the green which opens your inventory of instants and choose the one you want to use....you can not use instants by going into the inventory first, must go into the item first.......90% of the items will allow you to use an instant, there are a few that will not

Coin and supply instants can be used directly from the inventory
